A Reading teenager and a Lyon County Deputy were both hospitalized following a crash on US Highway 56 Thursday morning.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log, the accident occurred at mile marker 370.1 eastbound, or the Allen City limits, just before 7:40 am. A 2006 Ford Fusion driven by 16-year-old Bryer Douglas Scales of Reading was traveling east on US 56. At the same time, a Lyon County Sheriff’s vehicle driven by Deputy Ben Folks was also eastbound en route to another accident with lights and sirens activated.
The Scales vehicle made a left turn causing it to be struck on the left side by the Sheriff’s Office vehicle. Folks was taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health, but Scales was airlifted to Stormont-Vail in Topeka. Both had suspected serious injuries.
The accident occurred roughly 20 minutes after a crash in the 1300 block of US 56, about a mile east of Northern Heights High School, that sent 56-year-old Timothy Savage of Vassar to Newman with unlisted injuries. Lyon County Deputy Brandon Early says Savage was driving a garbage truck westbound when the passenger-side tires went off the highway causing the truck to roll into a ditch.
