Turkey hunters will have to leave Kansas if they want a bird this fall season.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks sys there will be no fall hunting season for turkeys as numbers have been declining, both across Kansas and across the Central Plains and Southeast. Wildlife and Parks says this is actually part of a trend dating back 15 years.
The fall harvest season typically generates fewer birds than the spring season, less than 500 birds collected last year, but Wildlife and Parks says it’s still “an important component of overall harvest.”
Friday’s announcement follows several other steps by Wildlife and Parks to reduce the impact the fall season has had on prior turkey numbers, including a reduction in the fall season length from 123 days to 41 back in 2019 and a reduction in the statewide bag limit from four birds to one in 2017. Wildlife and Parks is planning a new research project in January to look deeper into populations, ecology and habitat management.
