The Chase County Old School Development District has passed a major milestone in repurposing an historic building in Cottonwood Falls.
Spokesperson and President Lee Anne Coester says the board has finalized a partnership with Frontier Development of Manhattan.
This follows the district’s success in obtaining a $1 million grant, involving a housing study to demonstrate the need. It also follows a previous repurposing of the school gymnasium and connected classrooms, built in the 1960s, into a community center.
By fall 2024, Coester anticipates 10 apartment units as part of the old school building. Units will be rented to residents making between 60 and 150 percent of the area’s median income, with rent and utilities not to exceed 30 percent of renter income.
