The Emporia Senior Center will not have bingo Saturday.
Director Ian Boyd says the center has started a roof replacement process and it isn’t fully sealed. This allows rain to enter the building — which happened Thursday evening and again Friday morning, flooding the entire building. Besides causing an immediate safety hazard for guests and staff, Boyd says water has been dripping through electrical fixtures onto electronics, meaning there are both slippery floors and wet ceiling tiles.
This is a significant step for the Senior Center, which has had bingo as its main revenue stream aside from private and corporate donations. However, Boyd says safety of everybody using the facility is “paramount.”
