The Emporia State volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-16) to Missouri Southern Saturday night at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center in Joplin, Mo. After dropping the first set fending off three set points, the Lady Hornets started the second set on an 8-2 run, but Southern answered with an 8-1 run in the middle of the set to take command. The Hornets tied the set six times but could never take the lead. The final set was knotted at 15, but the Lions earned the sweep by ending the match on a 10-1 run including scoring the match’s final eight points.
Sandora Sasaki paced the Hornets with 14 kills while Maureen Mathews added 11. Anakaren Chavez led four Hornets in double-figure digs with 24 while Lillian Zeigler had three total blocks. ESU falls to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA while Missouri Southern improves to 9-4 and 2-2 inside Association play. Emporia State returns home to host #24 Northwest Missouri on Friday at White Auditorium. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
