Recognition and reflection were the main items of business for the USD 253 Emporia Board of Education Wednesday night.
At the start of the board’s regular meeting Wednesday night, members recognized the congregation of First United Methodist Church for its annual school supply drive benefiting district students. This year’s drive managed to provide supplies to right around 4,300 students across all of the district’s buildings.
Separately, staff and students of the Flint Hills Learning Center provided an update on operations and the center’s 180 days of awesome initiative. According to Learning Center Principal Justin Sargeant, the 180 Days of Awesome is all about promoting positivity amongst center staff and students while also decreasing the stigma that has surrounded the center in the past.
Sergeant adds the integration of Capturing Kids Hearts within all district buildings came at the perfect time as it meshes very well with the 180 Days of Awesome initiative.
During the consent agenda portion of the meeting, where several items can be approved with a single vote, board members approved a concurrent enrollment memorandum of agreement between the district and Flint Hills Technical College, and various donations including from the Walnut PTO to Walnut Elementary, Above and Beyond Home Improvement to Emporia High Theatre and Steve Sauder to Emporia High Athletics.
The USD 253 Board of Education will reconvene on Wednesday October 11 at Emporia High School. The meeting will follow the board’s EHS Student Council meeting and dinner which begins at 5 pm.
