One resolution annexing property into the city of Emporia gained unanimous approval Thursday morning, however, another is awaiting further clarification before potential action.
Lyon County Commissioners chose to table a resolution on the potential annexation of Industrial Park IV into the city limits as there was needed clarification as to who would be responsible for maintaining roadways in the area. Emporia Zoning Administrator Justin Givens says there are no immediate plans for development projects in the area, however, there is a road improvement project taking place through the city in the vicinity.
Givens says with that in mind, it makes sense to annex the property into the city limits.
Separately, commissioners did approve the annexation of property at 1100 South Highway 99 near the Emporia Municipal Airport. Again, Givens says there are no major plans for development in the area, however, given its proximity to the airport having the property within the city’s purview gives the city sole authority to make improvements in the area.
In other business, commissioners approved the republication of the 2023 multi-year fund to reflect an increase in dollars. The total increase, just over $700,000, will take the fund from roughly $3.3 million to $4.1 million.
The reason for the increase is to ensure all expenses are covered through the remainder of the year according to County Controller Dan Williams. Commissioners will consider approving the increase following a public hearing at 10 am October 19.
Separately Thursday, commissioners approved the purchase of a cruiser for the Sheriff’s Office at a cost of more than $42,000 and the purchase of a crack sealer for better than $65,000 for the Lyon County Highway Department. Lyon County Zoning staffers Sam Seeley and Michael Reed also delivered a report on the number of permits and other zoning projects “in progress.”
County commissioners will reconvene for their weekly meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside of the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
