It took several hours, but repairs have been complete on a damaged pole that was partially downed Sunday afternoon.
Evergy Crews, along with Emporia Fire and Emporia Police, were called to the intersection of West 30th and Prairie Street around 2:25 pm after an SUV struck a power pole in the intersection. According to Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms, the driver of the SUV rolled through the stop sign for unknown reasons, but was unharmed.
The impact split the pole in half downing the bottom half, however, the top half remained attached to the power lines above leading EPD to close the intersection until repairs were completed. Traffic has since been reopened
The accident and subsequent pole replacement did lead to a minor outage affecting less than 10 customers in the area. Repairs were complete and power was restored to all customers before 9:30 pm.
3 pm Sunday: No injuries, traffic blocked after vehicle collides with power pole at West 30th and Prairie Sunday afternoon
Traffic is blocked in front of the Evergy West 30th and Prairie substation following a non-injury accident that partially downed a power pole Sunday afternoon.
Emporia Fire, Emporia Police and Evergy crews were all called to the intersection of 30th and Prairie around 2:25 pm. According to Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms, an eastbound SUV, the make and model of which has not been disclosed, was traveling along West 30th Avenue approaching the intersection. Vortherms says the vehicle rolled through the stop sign and entered the front lawn of a residence where it struck a power pole.
The impact split the pole in half downing the bottom half, however, the top half remained attached to the power lines above. Evergy’s outage map noted an outage of fewer than five customers in the area, likely as a result of the accident.
The driver of the vehicle was unharmed and was taken home by EPD. Traffic in the intersection is completely blocked in all directions and will remain so until further notice.
