A short-term funding package for federal operations is in place. That doesn’t mean everybody in Congress likes it.
In fact, several Kansas Republicans — Roger Marshall in the Senate, Tracey Mann and Ron Estes in the House — voted against the bill. Marshall says he won’t approve a funding package that has money going to Ukraine. He also says the US needs to prioritize work to secure the southern border, step up efforts against fentanyl and try to pass a new farm bill — which he says isn’t structured now to help farmers much.
Mann says the continuing resolution, as it’s called, is “more of the same reckless government spending that got our country into this financial mess in the first place.” Estes, meanwhile, says it’s “not sustainable” to borrow $47,000 per second.
In favor were Senator Jerry Moran and Second District Congressman Jake LaTurner, who said House Republicans “put forward the most conservative spending bills in American history” and it’s important to keep government open so military service personnel, veterans and civil servants can keep getting benefits.
The measure keeps spending flat for 45 days until a one-year appropriation bill can be passed.
