Emporia Firefighters were busy in the early afternoon hours Sunday thanks to a pair of calls.
The first call, a grass fire, came down just before 1:25 pm at 1846 Road E5. According to Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage, the fire was the result of a controlled burn that became out of control in the area.
The fire scorched roughly half an acre of grass before it was put out. No injuries were reported and no structures were nearby.
The second call came roughly 30 minutes later and sent crews to the Eleven Boutique Hotel at 3021 US Highway 50 for what was originally reported as a structure fire. According to Steinlage, the incident was actually isolated to a dryer on the premises due to an overload of lint that caught fire.
According to Steinlage, management removed the dryer and extinguished the fire before crews arrived. No injuries and no damage to the building were reported.
Olpe and Americus Fire were toned out as mutual aid but were canceled shortly after.
