Emporia State University has announced a new full-ride scholarship for incoming freshmen majors in education and nursing.
The Jones Premier Nursing and Education Scholarship is available to students with a 3.7 weighted grade point average or above — or a minimum 28 ACT score. Students will also need to complete two essays and live in Lyon, Coffey or Osage counties. There will be six scholarships available, three each for education and nursing. One each in the different categories will be for students in Lyon, Coffey or Osage counties.
ESU Provost Brent Thomas says the scholarships come at a pivotal time as their continues to be a critical need for both qualified educators and health professionals across the nation.
Additionally, the announcement follows a trend of decreasing enrollment for the university in recent years. Thomas says cost is definitely a contributing factor to this trend and the new scholarships are a great resource to help students overcome that hurdle.
Scholarships will be renewable for four years. The first awards will be for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year. Six new four-year awards will be available for incoming freshmen every year after that.
The scholarships also include automatic admission into Emporia State’s Honors College.
This is the third scholarship program at ESU as created by the Jones Foundation. The original Jones vouchers became the Jones Success Scholarship in 2022, providing eligible students from Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties an automatic $7,000 scholarship over four years.
The application window is Nov. 1 through Jan. 15.
