“Alzheimer’s is not backing down and neither should we.”
Those words were shared just prior to the start of the 2023 Emporia Walk to End Alzheimers Saturday morning at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building. Residents, volunteers and representatives of the Alzheimer’s Association were on hand for the event including the Emporia State University Soccer team which has been volunteering with the event for the past several years providing activities and encouragement to walk participants along the path.
ESU Soccer Head Coach Bryan Sailer says he and his team are always ready to step up and support worthy causes such as Saturday’s walk.
In addition to the walk itself, Saturday’s activities also included the promise garden ceremony where residents each displayed a colored flower reflecting their own personal experiences with the disease. Walk manager Madison Ross says this piece of the event is incredibly powerful and needed for many individuals.
At the start of Saturday’s walk, the Alzheimer’s Association had managed to raise close to $16,000 towards its $20,000 fundraising goal.
All proceeds will go to support research, resources and services through the Alzheimer’s Association. Final totals are pending.
