Nobody was hurt when a planned fire went out of control in central Emporia on Tuesday.
The fire was reported around 8 am. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says firefighters were initially called to 313 West Fourth, the Lee Beran Recreation Center, but the fire was actually at 406 State nearby. Steinlage says there was a recreational fire in a firepit in the back yard of the address, but the fire shifted to about 50 nearby pellets.
It took less than 10 minutes to get the fire out. The fire was kept away from nearby structures.
