USD 251 North Lyon County could have an open enrollment policy in place by next month.
That’s if the board approves a draft of the policy at it next monthly meeting which will begin with a public hearing on the matter. The need for the policy comes with the impending expansion of open enrollment that will allow students across the state to transfer to any district beginning in 2024.
USD 251 Superintendent Bob Blair tells KVOE News he believes they could see some movement within the district, however, he does not believe much of it will occur at the high school level.
As part of the open enrollment expansion, districts that have the capacity to take transfers will have to do so. If districts have more applications than capacity a lottery system will then be put in place to determine who will be able to enter the district.
According to Blair, the district’s lottery process is still in the works and will most likely be fleshed out by spring of next year. He adds the lottery will have some exceptions for certain students.
In separate businesses during the board’s regular meeting last week, Blair delivered his regular capital outlay update where he discussed two recent purchases for the district, a new flag pole at the Northern Heights football field and a new cabinet for the district’s early childhood development center.
Additional items of business included a financial and legislative report and an executive session on personnel matters. The USD 251 Board of Education will reconvene for its monthly meeting in November.
