The Emporia State women’s soccer team scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 defeat of #6 Washburn at Moore Bowl in Topeka Sunday afternoon. Alexis Cole buried a chance inside the left post on a feed by Mackenzie Dimarco 16 minutes into the match. The Lady Hornets stifled Washburn’s attack holding the home team to just four shots in the game while managing 10 shots. Only three corner kicks were awarded in a physical game that featured 29 total fouls and one red card against Washburn. The loss ended Washburn’s five-match winning streak and was their first defeat in their last 16 matches dating back to the second game of the season. Emporia State improved to 9-5-4 overall and 8-2-1 in the MIAA and has clinched a home game in the first round of the MIAA playoffs. The Lady Hornets are tied for third in the standings with Fort Hays State with 25 points. Emporia State has won five-straight matches with just one defeat in their last nine games. The MIAA Soccer Tournament begins with first round matches at home sites on Friday. Semifinals and championships will be held at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita beginning November 9.
