We can tell you a few things about Halloween heading into the official trick-or-treat day.
There will be a lot of kids out and about. There will be a lot of great costumes. And this year, it will be cold.
Temperatures will be in the 30s for the trick-or-treaters and family members this time around, and that’s one of the safety points Emporia Police Capt. Ray Mattas is giving parents for Halloween 2023.
Once the ghosts and goblins find their ways home, Mattas also tells parents to check the candy before letting the kids dive in.
Street safety is vital for everybody — trick-or-treaters, family members and drivers. For pedestrians, Mattas says they need to cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections and to resist the temptation to “zig-zag” across the street to get to different houses. Parents should also hold the hands of younger children as they cross. For drivers, the message is simple: slow down.
