Bushong held its annual Home of the Brave Celebration on Saturday.
It was a chilly, damp day, but it was still festive as work continues on recognizing veterans, especially 10 Bushong residents who died in World War II. Longtime memorial organizer Dianne Bedner-Smith says she’s pleased to highlight the recent completion of the memorial wall. She says there was a lot of restoration work in a seven-month time.
The wall features the 10 soldiers who passed away, including one who was identified earlier this year and may be repatriated next year.
Activities included World War II re-enactments, lunch and a ribbon-cutting for Phase II — the memorial wall. The memorial itself will see some bench work next year, as well as a new sidewalk from the memorial to the wall. Smith and her husband, Gary, are also working to renovate Bushong’s old bank building into a veterans museum.
