Olpe finds themselves in the sectional round of 1A playoffs for the seventh consecutive year with a 23-14 victory against Central Heights.
In a rematch from district play, both teams knew the physicality of each other. Olpe won 28-0, two weeks ago, and got off to a quick start behind an Ethan Redeker rush from 3 yards out which would be the only score of the first quarter.
Olpe would find the end zone again, after stopping a long drive from Central Heights, behind a Redeker passing touchdown to Brody Cole.
Leading 14-0, heading into the second half, Olpe would take 7:26 off the clock before Redeker found Cade Whitmore to push Olpe’s lead to 20-0.
Central Heights would make things interesting in the fourth quarter. Brycean Velez took a quick pass from Brody Roullette 72 yards, narrowing the margin to 20-8.
Olpe would add a 26-yard field goal from Braydon Fowler with 2:02 remaining, taking over six minutes off the clock.
Roullette found Velez again from long distance, this time from 69 yards out but Olpe would recover the onside kick, and running out the remainder of the game clock.
Olpe’s Chris Schmidt was happy with how his team handled the physicality of the contest.
Olpe improves to 8-2, advancing to their seventh consecutive sectional appearance. They travel to Jefferson County North next week. The game will air on 14 KVOE-AM/96.9 FM with kickoff at 7 p.m. and a 6:35 p.m. on Friday.
