A South Dakota woman was brought to Emporia for observation and possible medical treatment after a crash northeast of the city early Sunday.
The crash happened on the Kansas Turnpike at mile marker 153.8, nearly 30 miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate and close to the Lyon-Wabaunsee county line, shortly before 4 am. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers say 20-year-old Emily Maria Estrella was northbound when her car hit a deer trying to cross the highway.
Estrella was wearing her seatbelt but was taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health with possible injuries. A passenger, 21-year-old Bryan Cantu of Donna, Texas, was not listed as hurt.
This is the latest vehicle-deer collision in Lyon County as the deer rutting season is in full swing. Undersheriff John Koelsch says deputies have investigated close to 30 such accidents since Sept. 15. The number of vehicle-deer crashes worked by troopers is pending.
Koelsch will join KVOE’s Newsmaker segment at 7:20 am Monday to discuss vehicle-deer collisions.
