Activities for Emporia’s All Veterans Tribute are already off to a good start, including notable participation in the 20th annual Freedom Fest, the Veterans Glass Blowing Workshop and Veteran Artist Opening Reception.
The schedule only gets busier from here, including the annual Veterans Roundtable on Tuesday. Organizer Clarence Frye urged residents — veterans and civilians alike — to attend. He calls this a good learning opportunity.
Chris Lovett, a retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 in the Kansas National Guard and a longtime history professor at Emporia State University, will be the featured speaker, focusing on the Kansas involvement in the Spanish-American War.
The roundtable is free to attend. It begins at 7:30 pm Tuesday at Emporia State’s Memorial Union Preston Family Room.
Wednesday will feature a special presentation organized by Emporia State’s Special Collections and Archives Department called “The Civil War in Kansas.” Will Haynes will lead the conversation starting at 7 pm. Library and Archives Public Services Supervisor Rebekah Curry will join KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment at 8:20 am Tuesday with a preview.
A host of activities saluting veterans is coming Saturday, including the annual parade at 9:30 am in downtown Emporia and the memorial service beginning at 11 am at the All Veterans Memorial.
