Emporia’s Spartan Boxing Club is warming up for something other than in-ring competition next week.
The club will host its first taco dinner fundraiser Monday evening. Head Coach Lucas Gorton says all proceeds will go towards the club’s operations including competition fees and new updated equipment.
Spartan Boxing Club was founded back in 2020 by Gorton and largely serves local youth with an all-volunteer coaching staff. Gorton says every dollar donated to the club goes directly towards its mission of providing not only training but also important life values for its members.
Many of the items for the evening’s fundraiser, including all of the food, were donated by local businesses and individuals. Gorton says they are grateful for this generosity as it means the club does not have to dip into its own funds and potentially limit the number of competitions their boxers can attend.
The taco dinner will take place from 5:30 pm to 9 pm Monday, November 13 at the First Church of the Nazarene Activity Center. Tickets are available in advance from any current club member or coach for $8. Tickets will also be available at the door the night of for $10.
The menu includes two tacos, rice and beans with chips and salsa provided at the table for dine-in. In addition to the dinner, the evening will include a silent auction and a raffle drawing for a 22-caliber rifle valued at $400.
Raffle tickets are $25 a piece or $60 for three tickets. Individuals must be 18 years or older and pass a background check in order to win.
