Parts of two counties in the KVOE listening area have been placed in a boil water alert.
Portions of Coffey County Rural Water District 2, including territory in Coffey and Greenwood counties, are in a boil water advisory until further notice. This also affects customers in Woodson County but not customers in Lyon County.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says the alert stems from a waterline break causing a loss of pressure in the water distribution system and increasing the risk of bacterial contamination. The advisory will be lifted only when KDHE says test samples are satisfactory.
Recommended steps for handling water until the advisory is lifted:
*Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
*Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
*If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
*Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
*Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.
A map provided on the Coffey County RWD 2 website indicates the district’s territory covers Lyon County from just south of Emporia to southeast Lyon County, also covering northeast Greenwood County and southwest Coffey County just west of Burlington and John Redmond Reservoir.
