Residents had a chance to learn more about the Spanish-American War as part of Emporia’s All Veterans Tribute this week.
Retired Kansas National Guard Chief Warrant officer and longtime Emporia State history professor Chris Lovett says there were several reasons why he focused on that particular conflict, which only lasted a few months in 1898 — but led to the United States gaining Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
Lovett’s presentation Tuesday night leads into Will Haynes’ “Civil War in Kansas” presentation, which will be at 7 pm Wednesday at Emporia State’s William Allen White Library.
A big event schedule is coming on Saturday, including:
*Veterans breakfast, 7-9:30 am at Emporia Presbyterian Manor
*Parade, 9:30 am along Commercial Street
*Memorial service, 11 am at the All Veterans Memorial
*Ham and bean feed, noon at American Legion Post 5
