Sarah Combes was in the process of setting the staff assignments for her fellow nurses at Newman Regional Health when she was told to come to the hospital’s emergency department waiting room Sunday evening.
When she got there, she found out she was the hospital’s fourth Daisy Award winner for extraordinary patient care. Combes says she loves the work she does for patients and their families.
Nurses are nominated for the honor. Pat Alingh says Combes took special care of her mother after she was brought to the hospital, including a room near the nurse’s station and constant updates about her condition.
Director of Nursing Heather Aylward says the nominations get shared so everybody at the hospital gets to know about the care nurses provide every day.
The DAISY Award was established back in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. His family established the award to honor the many nurses who cared for Barnes during his battle with the disease.
