Safer crosswalk setups are in place near two Emporia schools and Flint Hills Technical College, thanks to a partnership between the city of Emporia and Healthier Lyon County.
City crews have installed three “rapid rectangular flashing beacons” in two locations — one between Flint Hills Technical College and Emporia High, the other at 12th and Washington near Walnut Elementary. Similar crosswalk setups are already in place on East 12th near Emporia State University and on Mechanic Street near White Auditorium and the Lyon County Law Enforcement Center.
Funding comes through the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas Pathways to a Healthy Kansas. The city and Healthier Lyon County got $100,000 to build better pedestrian and cycling pathway options. Other projects to be funded through the grant include new sidewalks and safer paths near 12th and Burlingame as well as 24th from Prairie to Lincoln. A dedicated LCAT bus stop on 12th is also planned.
