Emporia Spartan Boxing Club’s inaugural fundraiser saw tremendous turnout and support from the local community Monday night.
In total, the club’s taco dinner fundraiser, held at First Church of the Nazarene, managed to bring in right around $4,000 much to the joy of Head Coach Lucas Gorton. Gorton says not only did the event bring in a large amount of money to the team, it provided an opportunity to show residents there is far more to the sport of boxing than what most see at first glance.
Upon seeing the lengthy line of residents coming in to support the club Monday, Gorton, a native Emporian, expressed great pride in his community.
He added Monday’s turnout is a great indicator that Emporians are beginning to see both the value in the team’s existence and the positive impact the sport of boxing can have on the lives of younger community members.
Monday’s dollars were generated by a combination of taco sales, community donations and raffle drawings with all proceeds going towards team operations including purchasing new equipment for competitors and travel for the upcoming Silver and Golden Gloves competitions.
Spartan Boxing Club was founded back in 2020 by Gorton and largely serves local youth with an all-volunteer coaching staff.
