Our first bout of winter weather this season is now possible for parts of the KVOE listening area this weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches affecting Lyon, Chase and Morris counties from 6 am Saturday to 12 am Sunday. Weather Service meteorologist Chelsea Picha says snow should develop Saturday morning in central Kansas and then move east.
The current forecast calls for up to four inches of snow as a general range, with locally higher amounts up to six inches — especially from Chase County into central Kansas. Icing amounts are currently pending. Picha says this should not be a windy event, so major visibility issues should not be a factor.
There is already a rain-snow transition zone setting up near the Kansas Turnpike, and Picha also tells KVOE News the current forecast really hinges on a push of colder air and its timing. If the cold air moves in relatively quickly, snow amounts will be higher for the alerted counties. If relatively warm air stays across the area, conditions will shift to a rain-snow mix.
