Turnout for the 13th and final Walnut Turkey Day Dash left organizers with a large smile on their faces Thanksgiving morning.
Nearly 330 people turned out to run and walk the route that began at Walnut Elementary School. Walnut Principal Jami Dakin says the turnout was exactly what they had hoped for.
Dakin says over the last 13 years, the dash has become a local tradition for participants and volunteers. This includes the Emporia High School Lady Spartan basketball team which has assisted with the event for the past eight years.
Head Coach Carolyn Dorsey says her team has given it their all every year.
Dakin says plans are in the works to create a new signature event for Walnut which she says will likely have a competitive family-oriented theme to it. Still, additional details are not available at this time.
All proceeds from the Turkey Day Dash, as always, will go to benefit the Walnut Elementary School PTO. Final fundraising totals are currently pending.
