The #24 Emporia State basketball team had four score in double figures in an 82-72 victory over Indianapolis at White Auditorium on Sunday afternoon. UIndy came out firing hitting five of their first six from the field to take a 15-8 lead at the first media timeout, but the Hornets gradually pulled in front on a slow 10-2 run to lead 18-17 with 8:39 to go in the half. ESU built the lead as big as six but UIndy scored five in a row to end the half tied at 38. After allowing the Greyhounds to shoot over 65% from the field in the first half, ESU held UIndy to 37% shooting in the second half while forcing 16 turnovers. Atavian Butler led E-State with 22 points in the game while Alijah Comithier added 19. Kaden Evans matched a career high with six steals in the game. Evans said the team had a lot of respect for the defending Great Lakes Valley Conference champions coming into the game.
Head coach Craig Doty praised the team’s defensive effort in the game.
The Hornets have won six in a row and improve to 6-1 with the win. E-State returns to action in their MIAA opener at home against Washburn on Saturday.
