Community members have another opportunity to give back to those in need this Christmas.
The Emporia Area Toy Drive sponsored by ABATE of Kansas District 12, American Legion Riders, VFW Arnie’s Tavern, and Harry & Lloyd’s are accepting donations for new, unwrapped toys until Friday. Barrels for donations are at all three Emporia Dollar General stores, the VFW, American Legion Post 5, Arnie’s Tavern, and Harry & Lloyds.
If community members want to donate gift certificates, they can drop them off at Emporia American Legion Post 5 during its office hours Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or during lounge hours from 4 to 8 p.m.
On KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment Monday, Emporia American Legion Post 5 Commander Clay Childs says the partnership with ABATE District 12 is helping them make it a bigger event for Emporia.
Distribution of the gifts will be taking place on Sunday. After that wraps up, Post 5 will be hosting a Chili Cook-Off beginning at Noon. Childs says everyone is welcome to the event and bring their best chili with competitors eating for free. There is a suggested donation for others who want to eat that’ll go to the American Legion.
Prizes will be given to chilis with the best taste, name, and the hottest.
In between the cutoff for donations for gifts and the distribution and chili cook-off, Post 5 will be hosting a craft bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
