Emporia firefighters say the early Wednesday fire reported at Four Seasons was not actually a fire, and they say a fire Tuesday night in west Emporia was small in nature.
Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says there was a faulty furnace motor at 1915 West 24th, which initially triggered a full structure fire response by Emporia, Americus and Olpe departments around 6:20 am. Once it was determined the issue was a furnace motor instead of a fire, Americus and Olpe were canceled before they arrived and most Emporia firefighters at the scene were told to return to service.
Separately, Emporia crews were dispatched to 930 Graphic Arts around 7 pm after a reported fire in a trailer home. Conley says an outlet overheated, causing smoke. The situation was handled quickly.
No injuries were reported with either incident.
6:50 am Wednesday: Investigation into structure fire call at Four Seasons apartment building leads to less serious cause
Firefighters from several Lyon County departments were called to a reported structure fire in northwest Emporia, but the situation does not appear to be as serious as first feared.
Emporia, Americus and Olpe firefighters were dispatched to the 1900 block of West 24th for a structure fire at one of the Four Seasons apartment buildings around 6:20 am. Early indications a furnace motor kicked out smoke, so the decision was made to cancel responses from Americus and Olpe. Most other Emporia firefighters were also allowed to go available shortly after 6:35 am.
