Six residents were hurt, at least two with suspected serious injuries, after a head-on crash on Kansas Highway 99 south of Emporia on Wednesday night.
Troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened on Kansas Highway 99 just north of Road 135 shortly after 8:30 pm and involved two pickup trucks. A northbound truck driven by 33-year-old Justin Atchison of Lebo hit a deer crossing the highway and veered into the southbound lane, colliding with a truck driven by 62-year-old Loren Hughes of Eureka.
Hughes and a passenger, 62-year-old Karen Hughes, also of Eureka, were hospitalized with suspected serious injuries. Atchison and a passenger, 33-year-old Amy Atchison, also of Lebo, were transported with suspected minor injuries. Two juveniles in the Atchison vehicle were listed on the log. Lyon County deputies and Emporia EMS crews say they were hospitalized as well with unspecified injuries.
The four people specified on the crash log were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
K-99 was closed for about 90 minutes after the wreck. Troopers, Lyon County deputies, Emporia/Lyon County EMS, Olpe first responders and Kansas Department of Transportation staffers all responded.
