The state’s proposed design for standard license plates didn’t sit well with residents across the state, including those taking part in the latest KVOE News online poll.
The question was simple — do you like the new plates, which featured a wheat-yellow background color, black and midnight-blue text and the words “to the stars” on the bottom of the tag. Less than 200 responses were filed, but the answer was overwhelmingly no — as in 87 percent of responses. Only 10 percent said they liked the new design. The rest were undecided.
Due to the sharp criticism since the tag design was announced last week, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says a public input process is under development so residents can have a say in the new design that’s currently set to make its debut this upcoming spring. Governor Kelly says there will be several key characteristics — especially in order to make it easy for law enforcement and other first responders to read:
*License plate numbers will be seven digits.
*Any phrase, motto, or slogan must be placed at the bottom of the license plate.
*Any graphic must be placed on the right or left side of the license plate number.
*Graphics must not resemble letters, numbers, or special characters in a way that would interfere with the ability to read the license plate number.
*Background design must not interfere with the ability to read the license plate number.
*The license plate must have a light background behind the license plate number, and the license plate number must be black.
