The Emporia High basketball teams started the season on a high note with a sweep over Ottawa Friday night.
The Spartans upset the ninth ranked team in 4A, 50-39.
Emporia High led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and led 22-14 at halftime. The Spartans pushed the lead to 20 but Ottawa chipped away, however, the closest the Cyclones got was four points.
River Peters led Emporia High with 23 points, tying a career-high on 10-of-13 shooting. Sheldon Stewart scored a career-high 14 points.
Coach Lee Baldwin was proud of the Spartans’ toughness.
Emporia High is 1-0 and will face Spring Hill at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at White Auditorium.
Meanwhile, the Emporia High girls cruised to a 63-35 victory.
The Lady Spartans trailed by four early but then went on a 17-0 run and never looked back.
Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 23 points. Emeil Bennett added 11.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey says there were some early first game jitters.
Emporia High is 1-0 on the season. The Lady Spartan will play Wichita Trinity in a 6 p.m. game Thursday at White Auditorium. Both games will be on KVOE.
