On a play that appeared to be called offsides, Washburn was awarded a penalty kick and Karlie Schuckman scored the game-winner to eliminate Emporia State 2-1 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in Ashland, Ohio on Friday afternoon. Washburn’s Schuckman tallied first with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, but MIAA Offensive Player of the Year Mackenzie Dimarco knotted the match at one with just over 25 minutes to go. The key play occurred with under 10 minutes to play when the offside flag came up against Washburn, but the Lady Hornets were whistled for a handball that turned into the game-winning score.
The loss ends the ESU season at 14-6-4. Dimarco ends her career with ESU records for goals, points, game-winning goals, shots, and shots on goal and is the MIAA record holder in goals and points. Hannah Woolery wraps up her career with the Lady Hornet assist record and is second in points in program history. Joanie Westcoat finished behind Woolery for second in ESU career assists. Westcoat and Dimarco share the program record of 90 career matches.
