Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell is pleased with the work leading up to — and through — a special exercise designed to gauge readiness in the case of a radiation incident at Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station.
FEMA conducted a graded exercise Thursday after training earlier in the week. FEMA gives state officials like Radiological Exercise Specialist Jess Penn, a former Emporia Police officer, the evaluation criteria for Penn to create the actual exercise.
The event was held at Emporia State for years before moving it to Neosho Rapids. This event was held at Hartford High, which Fell says was a good move due to more parking and restroom availability.
Lyon and Coffey counties have had a longstanding agreement for Lyon County to have a dedicated shelter in case of radioactive issues at Wolf Creek. Lyon County’s official Reception Center Plan is in place so Coffey County residents can be evacuated, monitored and decontaminated in a safe environment if that step’s ever needed.
