Senior Katie Horyna led Emporia State with 14 points as the Lady Hornets started MIAA play with a Turnpike Tussle win over Washburn 60-57 at White Auditorium in Emporia Saturday afternoon. Horyna was one of three Lady Hornets in double figures as Tylieea Wallace chipped in 11 off the bench while Faith Paramore also scored 11 with 14 rebounds. ESU outrebounded Washburn by nine and outscored Washburn 11-6 in second chance points. The Lady Hornets are 1-0 in the MIAA and drop Washburn to 0-1 inside ‘Association’ play.
In the men’s game, the #21 Hornets blew a 15-point lead but stormed back to beat the Ichabods 71-69. Senior guard Atavian Butler left the game in the second half with a dislocated knee cap. He is the third Hornet basketball player to suffer the injury this season and did not return. Owen Long led ESU with 22 points as the Hornets connected on 32 of 40 foul shots to improve to 7-1 on the season and pick up their seventh straight win.
