There are a few pointers, but the Emporia Animal Shelter has passed its annual state inspection.
Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille had a lot of details on KVOE’s Morning Show on Monday. She says part of the guidance comes from work that began over a year ago.
Achille also says the state inspections are essentially a “white glove” treatment, including a close look at supplies, catalogs, files and other operations.
Achille says failure to pass inspection would force the shelter to make major changes in a short period of time — a month or less — or, depending on the violation, force a shutdown. Achille self-reported two minor violations during the interview: a dog water bowl that was overrunning and a kennel gate that that had developed a softball-sized hole. Both will be fixed this week.
This comes as the shelter continues to be full to overfull when it comes to cats and dogs. There has been an “immense amount” of community intakes, regardless of whether they are abandoned or dumped. The shelter has 18 full dog kennels and 18 full cat kennels at this time. Achille says a $25 adoption special continues through at least mid-December.
