For the 31st year, Wreaths Across America will be taking place next weekend and for the first time in its history, the City of Emporia will be taking part.
Wreaths Across America is a national movement that seeks to “remember, honor and teach” the service of veterans by placing wreaths on veteran headstones each year. This year, more than 3,700 locations across the nation will be participating in National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, December 16 including the city of Emporia’s Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Local coordinator Scott Burenheide says the local event will be slightly different from other locations.
Burenheide notes while this year’s event will be slightly smaller in scale than others across the nation, that will not be the case moving forward as they have large plans for the future.
The ceremony on Saturday, December 16 will begin at 11 am and Burenheide expects it should take close to 45 minutes. Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that grew from the ceremony that was begun by Morrill Worcester, a Maine businessman, at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992.
