The ongoing full-to-overfull status at the Emporia Animal Shelter has administrators looking deeper into a possible expansion or new location.
Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille says the need for more space is clear.
On KVOE’s Morning Show this week, Achille said the operation needs at least double its current space, which includes 18 dog and 18 cat kennels — all of which are currently full. And she says the need is such that there will likely be full kennels, regardless of how many would be added.
Achille says a $25 adoption special continues through at least mid-December as a way to alleviate the current situation.
Achille encouraged more local and area residents to adopt pets through the shelter — and she encouraged residents considering surrenders to plan ahead of any calls to the shelter. Achille also asked pet owners to microchip their animals or take advantage of that opportunity when the shelter offers it as part of its adoption package beginning next year.
