Another cut in the state’s food sales tax is just a few weeks away.
Currently at 4 percent, the sales tax will drop to 2 percent effective New Year’s Day. This follows action by lawmakers and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly to drop the tax from 6.5 percent, its original rate when the “Axe the Food Tax” legislation was passed in May 2022, to zero by January 2025.
The new rate does not apply to everything food-related. It actually applies to food, food ingredients and certain prepared foods. Come January, shoppers will see two tax rates on their receipts — one for qualifying products and one for other items.
