The Emporia High basketball teams started the Paul Terry Classic on a high note Thursday at White Auditorium.
The Emporia High boys overcame a slow start en route to a 47-35 victory over Spring Hill to improve to 2-0 on the season. Emporia High led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter and used a 16-3 second quarter to lead 25-11 at halftime. The Spartans led by as many as 18 and led 36-20 heading to the fourth. Spring Hill cut the deficit to seven but not any closer.
Junior River Peters led Emporia High with a new career-high 24 points and was 10-for-12 from the free-throw line.
Coach Lee Baldwin says there was one spurt of the game where the Spartans looked really good.
Meanwhile, a 10-0 run for the Emporia High girls set the tone in their game with Wichita Trinity where they never relinquished the lead in a 48-10 victory to improve to 2-0.
Emporia High led 16-3 at the end of the first quarter and 30-5 at halftime. The Lady Spartans led 46-8 at the end of the third quarter which saw the final eight minutes played with a running clock.
Senior Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 19 points.
Emporia High held Wichita Trinity to 0-for-23 from the field with all of the Knights’ points coming from the free-throw line.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey says it was a team effort to pick up their second win of the season.
Both teams will play Hayden in their second games of the Paul Terry Classic on Friday night. Girls are scheduled to tip at 6 p.m. boys to follow at 7:30 p.m. The games will be broadcast on KVOE with coverage beginning at 5:40 p.m.
