Emporia’s Neighborhood Toy Drive celebrates a milestone this weekend.
This will be the 40th rendition of the drive, which collects toys, bikes, gift cards and money for children in need locally. On KVOE’s Morning Show this week, Kent Schnakenberg — part of the original Delane Drive Toy Drop committee — had fond memories of how the event started.
Current lead organizer Marlo Walburn says the processes changed after the COVID-19 pandemic started. One thing that didn’t change was the community support.
The Toy Drive is from 6-9 pm Saturday. Once again, the official drop-off point for gifts will be 1830 Hillcrest. Santa and Mrs Claus will be on hand. Also, homes along Delane, Darlene, Diane, Hillcrest and Arrowhead streets will be well-decorated with holiday lights, inflatables and luminaries. Unwrapped gifts will go to the Salvation Army, while monetary donations go to SOS.
