All customers affected by a major power outage in portions of south and central Emporia are now back online.
Power was fully restored between 6 pm and 6:30 pm, nearly three hours after the outage was reported around 3:20 pm. The outage affected customers from Prairie to East and 12th Avenue to just south of the Emporia city limits and was the result of a downed power line on South Commercial Street according to Evergy District Services Manager Rolland Trahoon II.
Nearly 3,000 customers were impacted by the outage with that number being cut down to fewer than 100 by 5:30 pm. The outage did impact the KVOE radio tower near the David Traylor Zoo forcing the tower to go on generator power for a time.
At least two stoplights on Congress and Constitution at Sixth were also affected, however, no impacts were reported to city or school facilities or Newman Regional Health.

The number of residents affected by a major power outage Thursday afternoon has been cut down significantly.
Fewer than 100 residents remain offline as of 5:50 pm after nearly 3,000 customers lost power in portions of south and central Emporia just after 3:20 pm. The cause of the outage was determined to be a downed power line in the city limits, the exact location of which has not yet been announced.
Evergy is currently re-evaluating its timeline for having power fully restored to all customers. The original outage affected customers from Prairie to East and 12th Avenue to just south of the Emporia city limits.
According to the Evergy outage map a pair of outages located at West 4th Avenue, near the Lee Beran Recreation Center, and West Copely Avenue are affecting fewer than five customers. A downed power line has been identified as the cause of a major power outage within the city of Emporia.
The exact location of the downed line has not yet been announced, however, Evergy District Services Manager Rolland Trahoon II says crews are in the process of isolating the line with hopes of having power restored to a majority of the nearly 3,000 affected customers by 6 pm. The outage was reported just after 3:20 pm mainly affecting customers in southern and central Emporia including KVOE’s transmitter near the David Traylor Zoo.
According to the Evergy outage map, the outage stretched from Prairie to East and from 12th Avenue to just south of the Emporia city limits. Stoplight outages were reported at Congress and Constitution at Sixth, with no additional outages announced.

Close to 3,000 Evergy customers are offline from the southern limits to portions of central Emporia.
According to Evergy’s outage map, the outage was reported just after 3:20 pm affecting customers from Prairie to East and from 12th Avenue to just south of the Emporia city limits. Stoplights are out at least two locations in Emporia including Congress and Constitution at Sixth.
Additional stoplight outages have not been announced at this time, however, drivers should approach intersections with caution.
