It was a split for the Emporia High basketball teams against Hayden Friday night as part of the Paul Terry Classic at White Auditorium.
The Emporia High boys defeated the Wildcats, 50-44, to improve to 3-0. The game was tied at 13 at the end of the first quarter before Emporia High took a 28-24 lead at halftime. The Spartans led by as many as eight in the second half with Hayden cutting the deficit to as close as two.
River Peters led Emporia High with 22 points while Sheldon Stewart had a career-high 17 points.
Coach Lee Baldwin says the Spartans found a way to get a win.
Meanwhile the Emporia High girls fell for the first time as they fell 50-45. Emporia High led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter but an 8-3 Hayden run gave them a 19-15 lead at halftime. Hayden led by as many as seven before Emporia High pulled within one twice in the final minute.
Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 21 points.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey says the scoreless drought in the second quarter was a big difference in the game.
The Emporia High girls will play Spring Hill at 1 p.m. with the boys to play Wichita Trinity at 2:30 p.m. Both games will air on Mix 104.9.
