The Holiday season carries a special meaning to many, but maybe none more so than those who have taken the vow to serve and protect the community.
The service portion of that oath was on full display at Bluestem Farm and Ranch Supply and Walmart Saturday morning as the Emporia Police Department, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and Emporia Fire Department took part in the annual Badges United bell-ringing event for the Emporia Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign. Emporia Police Sgt. Dominic Vortherms says it is important for all public service agencies, such as local law enforcement, to support the work of service organizations such as the Salvation Army.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says they are always proud to take part in the friendly competition between agencies saying the holiday season carries an extra special sense of importance amongst all public safety entities.
Emporia Fire Chief Brandon Beck agreed and says opportunities like Saturday mean a lot to him and his department and even more to those who have suffered tragedies over the holiday season.
Once local first responders cleared the scene Saturday afternoon, the Emporia Lions Club took over watch of the kettles at both locations. Lions Club Member Gary Post says being a part of the event each year is a great experience for all involved.
As has been tradition in years past, the Lions Club pledged to match the first $1,000 raised as part of Saturday’s efforts. Fundraising totals are currently pending.
Badges United was the second major bell-ringing event this week following the annual Real Estate Wednesday challenge. The Red Kettle Campaign will continue through Christmas Eve with a fundraising goal of $40,000.
Bell ringers are still needed throughout the campaign, and those interested in taking a shift can sign up at Registertoring.com.
