The Emporia High basketball teams picked up wins on the final day of the Paul Terry Classic on Saturday at White Auditorium.
The Emporia High boys successfully defended their championship from last season with a 57-43 victory over Wichita Trinity. After a slow start where the Spartans trailed by 3, the Spartans finished the first quarter on a 13-0 run to lead 18-8. Emporia High led 32-17 at halftime and led by as many as 21 in the second half.
River Peters led three Spartans in double-figures with 17 points. Sheldon Stewart added 15 and Cooper Rech had 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Coach Lee Baldwin said the difference in the game was when they went on an 18-0 run spanning from the late stages of the first quarter and early into the second quarter.
Emporia improved to 4-0 with the win.
Meanwhile, the Emporia High girls bounced back from a loss to Hayden and defeated Spring Hill 55-46. Emporia High started the game on a 10-0 and led by as many as 18 in the first half. Spring Hill made it a game in the second half and pulled to within six, but not any closer.
Addie Kirmer led Emporia High with 17 points while Emeil Bennett recorded a career-high 14 points.
Coach Carolyn Dorsey said it was a tale of two halves.
Emporia High improved to 3-1 with the win.
Emporia High will hit the road for the first time this season when it travels to Shawnee Mission North on Tuesday. Girls will tip at 5:15 p.m. with the boys to follow at 7 p.m.
