Nursing students of Flint Hills Technical College reached the first major milestone in their careers Friday afternoon.
Students in the program received their nursing pins as part of a special ceremony on the college’s campus with friends, family, college administration and local healthcare leaders in attendance. Amongst this year’s graduates was Brielle Bowman who was one of three recipients of the Newman Regional Health Hardy Hubbard Memorial Scholarship back in November.
Bowman will now be moving on to work with Newman Regional Health and says Friday’s ceremony filled her with a great sense of accomplishment.
Also receiving her pin Friday was Topeka native Brooklyn Carper who says her career journey originally had a different destination before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Newman Chief Nursing Officer Heather Aylward was among those in attendance Friday saying it is important to her and hospital leadership to show their support to the next generation of nursing professionals.
Six nursing students received their pins as part of Friday’s ceremony. In years past, the pinning ceremony took place before the college’s winter commencement ceremony, however, with lower numbers of participation in recent years, the college opted to forgo the winter activities and instead hold a singular commencement in the spring.
Meanwhile, Emporia State University held its first of two winter commencement ceremonies in White Auditorium Friday evening with graduate-level students receiving their various degrees. Commencement activities will continue for the university Saturday morning with activities for undergraduate students beginning at 9:30 am inside of White Auditorium.
