The Emporia High boys wrestling team had a successful day in the EHS Winter Classic on Saturday.
Emporia High had three individual champions en route to a first-place finish as a team with 233 points, 45 points ahead of runner-up Hutchinson. Freshman Gabe Wassom (106), junior Isaiah Morales (126) and senior Jeremiah Huber (175) won their respective weight classes.
Wassom won his championship match with a 12-3 major decision over Harry Costa of Wamego. Wassom says it was a good day for him on the mat.
Wassom is now 12-0 on the season and is currently ranked third at 106 in Class 5A. Morales pinned Hutchinson’s Jose Zuniga in 1:11 in his championship match to improve to 10-1 on the season. Morales says he wanted the best result possible.
Morales improved to 10-1 on the season with the win. Huber pinned Burlingame’s Jose Arevalo in 3:22 to win his championship match. Huber improved to 10-2 on the season and said Saturday’s tournament is going to help during the season.
The Spartans got runner-up finishes from Holden Timmons (113), Jackson Goodman (132), and Tayten Ervin (165). Jose Vargas (285) and Christian Trujillo (157) each finished third in their respective weight classes.
Emporia High coach Brook Medrano was pleased with how the Spartans competed on their home mats.
Emporia High will return to action on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at home as the Spartans will take on Spring Hill in a dual.
Meanwhile, multiple area wrestlers also competed in the tournament. Burlingame finished eighth as a team with 92 points. The Bearcats had an individual champion in sophomore Logan Courtois who defeated Goodman in the championship match at 132. Courtois said his match against Goodman was the toughest match he’s had this season.
Courtois is currently the top-ranked wrestler at 132 in 3-2-1A. The Bearcats also had two second-place finishes from Scott Leandro (120) and Arevalo. Osage City had four wrestlers compete with Daityn Meek finishing fourth at 126.
