It’s been a busy year for Healthier Lyon County.
One of the recent projects the coalition has been working on is the flashing beacons being installed across Emporia.
Healthier Lyon County Grant Manager Daphne Mertens joined KVOE’s Morning Show recently to give an update on what’s happened throughout 2023 with the coalition.
Mertens touched on the flashing beacons that have been installed. Those locations include between Emporia High School and Flint Hills Technical College, two around EHS and Emporia Middle School, and at 12th and Washington just north of Walnut Elementary School.
Mertens says the City of Emporia and USD 253 have been great partners to work with. Mertens says the demo projects of the flashing beacons were a win for Healthier Lyon County.
Along with the flashing beacons being installed, Mertens touched on safe routes to school. Mertens says Healthier Lyon County didn’t want to stop from there with the flashing beacons. Staff members attended a summit through KDOT where they found out five grants were being given out to five communities to assist with the safe routes to school program.
Once Healthier Lyon County found out about the grants, they went to the city to get an application submitted to KDOT. Mertens says she believes a strong application has been submitted to KDOT.
Mertens says the recipients of the grants will be announced in January.
